Project Management Planning for Success

As all project managers know, the only way to have a successful completion of a project is for the project management planning to be as thorough and well thought out as possible. Those that wish to rush right into a project are usually destined for failure because they fail to realize the value of a properly thought out and constructed plan can have.

The process of project management planning has to begin at the starting stage of a project. Attempting to implement a plan mid-stream is generally very difficult and not very cost effective.

Components of a project management planning should include more than just a Gantt chart. They may be handy and useful, but the best results can be achieved with a detailed plan that is documented. One thing that is sometimes overlooked is the needs of the stakeholders or sponsors. If their needs are not met, the project could be interpreted as a failure.

The people that will decide if a project is a success are the sponsors of the project or the ones that finance it. Another group that will decide if the project is a success is the target customers that will purchase the deliverables from the project. The users of the product which could be different than the ones who made the purchase, along with the project manager and his team, can also have an influence on the success of the project, to a lesser extent.

It is best to fulfill the needs of those that will decide if the project is a success or not. This will help those in charge of the project management planning details to put the correct tasks in place, so the project will reach its maximum potential.

An example of how a project management planning can be accomplished best is what a good number of people do when they have a known starting point and ending point. By making the two match up in the middle, a clear path to success can be found.
