Incentive-related barriers to use of the methodology:
- Results-driven focus. An organization that pushes for results, rather than ensuring quality project plan process, will encourage good work, but not following procedure. Sometimes this is effective, but it usually results in hidden problems with project work and project results.
- Lack of incentive for compliance. In asking project managers to follow the methodology, the PMO is asking them to change the way they work. Project managers will only comply if the PMO has answered the question, “What’s in it for me?” Frequent praise, appreciation, bonuses for compliance, and opportunity for promotion are appropriate incentives. Incentives are more powerful than disincentives for noncompliance.
